Willow Class - Year 5/6 2022 - 2023
Mrs Ramsay
Hello and welcome to Willow Class!
Willow Class is a mixed Year 5 and 6 class. Years 5 and 6 are challenging, but exciting years in primary school where our pupils develop the necessary skills to transition into their next stage of education - high school. Do not worry though! They will be supported throughout the year by myself, Miss Yates and our teaching assistant, Mr Pickup.
I find having a mixed class to be beneficial for our children as it provides the pupils in Year 5 with the opportunity to preview what life is like in Year 6 and prepare themselves for the upcoming year. As they work collaboratively in class, both the children in Year 5 and Year 6 learn from each other through seeing examples of high quality work they can aspire to and having the ability to explain a method or a process or how to improve a piece of work. In addition to this, children are able to socialise and interact with children in a different year group who they may not have been in a class with before, which helps them to develop other important skills. Our new curriculum provides us with many opportunities to enhance the children's learning through class visits, local walks and having visitors into school. We place great importance on ensuring our children's learning experiences are memorable.
In Year 5, children begin to think about their transition to high school through our Mount Carmel Partnership programme. Throughout the year, they will visit Mount Carmel or staff from Mount Carmel will come to school, to take part in a range of enrichment opportunities across multiple subjects. This programme allows our children to not only access areas of the curriculum that is difficult in a primary school, but to gain an understanding about what life is like at high school so that they are well prepared and the transition is easy for them.
In Year 6, the first thing that comes to people's minds are the SATs. While they are important and we strive to ensure our pupils are totally ready and prepared for that week, we also want to ensure that our pupils' last year of primary school is a memorable one for many other reasons. We spend the year enjoying a whole range of topics and subjects in class and begin to introduce SATs preparation when it is right for our pupils. To find out what topics we cover, please have a look at the curriculum overview. More information on the SATs is given to parents at later dates throughout the year.
Children in Willow Class are encouraged to always try their best and look after one another. We aim to make our classroom a place where children feel confident and secure so that they believe in themselves and are willing to have a go.
Please don't hesitate to come and see us if you have any questions or queries.
