Helping your child with reading.

At SASJ we read all the time. In our lessons, with our friends, with our teachers, inside and outside, for learning and for fun. You can see more about how reading is taught in Guided Reading sessions and the texts we look at in lessons on the main English page.

We ask that children read at home , ideally to or with an adult, as often as possible (aim for around 5 times a week). Each child has a reading record that they bring home daily to help them keep track of and celebrate what they have achieved. Younger children may need an adult to help record this. For older children, our expectation is that they will ask an adult to add their initials/sign.

When a child has completed a book they take a quiz (in school) that helps them and their teachers determine the next step in their learning. They can then choose an new book from our school library that matches their ZPD and continue on with their reading journey. Once a half term each child also takes a Star Reader quiz which helps identify strengths and potential gaps in their learning; this also influences their ZPD (see below!)

We have plenty of avid readers in school - they can, if they choose to, quiz on books they have read at home. Many choose to as, each year, children are set a 'points' target to try and meet or beat by the end of the year. They gain points with every book they read. Most children get over 15 points but our record (so far) is 235+!

Below is some information about the Accelerated Reader approach that we use in school from Year 2 upwards. Check out how many books we've read:
